Pepa Hristova, born in Bulgaria in 1977 and a member of the Ostkreuz agency, now lives and works in Hamburg. She studied communication design with a focus on photography in Hamburg. In numerous series on Eastern Europe, she photographed the Muslim-Turkish minority in Bulgaria and Albanian women who live in a male identity due to an ancient rite. She has received numerous scholarships and awards for her work, including the Grenzgänger Scholarship of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Otto Steinert Prize, the C/O Berlin Talents Prize, the Gabriel Grüner Scholarship and the scholarship of the Akademie der Künste Berlin.
The exhibited work shows RAHIME (66). She became a man at the age of 25. She felt it was an honour to take care of her family after the death of her brother. She took an oath to remain a virgin forever and to take on the duties of a man.
