Wolfgang Zurborn, born in 1956 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, studied at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich, was a lecturer at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, at the Technische Universität in Braunschweig, and at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen.
The challenge in realising the work "China! Which China?" was for Zurborn to translate the experience of the highly complex megacities like Shanghai or Beijing, nested in many parallel worlds, into a personal visual language that seeks out proximity in the foreign. These cities seemed to him like an over-dense collage of signs, bodies and spaces. In his photographs, he tries to transform this experience into legible compositions.
