Artist Meets Archive #2: A Part of the Part

Anna Orłowska (*1986 in Opole) lives and works in Warsaw. Orłowska started her artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań and continued her studies at the National Film School in Łódź in Poland. At the same time she studied at the Institute for Creative Photography in Opava, Czech Republic. The Polish artist creates images on the border between staging and documentation.Artist ProgrammeArtist Meets Archive

Anna Orłowska was an invited artist in the Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln as part of the second edition of the Artist Meets Archive programme.

Her carefully planned and constructed images convey situations, visions or scenarios that have a performative quality. The settings and motifs thus appear cinematic or theatrical. The choice of themes is characterized by a look into the past. As in the work Whitwash from 2018. Orłowska deals with the erasure of German identity of the post-war generation in Upper Silesia. In the series Bath, 2017 Orłowska explores the change in the perception of images with paraffin works. An electronic heating system regulates the surface condition of the wax layer in the metal display case and contributes to the disturbance of vision and the recognizability of the motif underneath. Orłowska thus not only questions the belief in images, but also in a static fixation of the past.

The Artist Meets Archive programme invites international artists to collaborate with the Cologne Archives & Collections. Within the framework of a residency, they can immerse themselves in the city's photographic holdings and develop an exhibition project for the Photoszene Festival. In the first two editions of Artist Meets Archive, eleven artists were able to participate and present their projects in Cologne.
