Along with Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth, Tata Ronkholz was one of the first students in the so-called Becher-class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Between starting her studies there in 1977 and turning away from artistic photography for personal reasons in 1985, the trained interior designer created an impressively precise and consistent body of work, which focused on marginalized industrial buildings and small shop windows. Of the motifs she found primarily in Cologne and Düsseldorf as well as in the Ruhr area, the “Trinkhallen” series is certainly the most succinct.
