While photography exhibitions gradually opened in the city area, the main event period was around Photokina from September 16 - 25, asking for an extensive supporting program and gallery tours.

Innere Sicherheit / The State I Am In

von Katja Stuke & Oliver Sieber

The topic is currently of great relevance not only in Cologne. The curators Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber examined it at its basis and thus reflected on the basic principles of social coexistence: What does a person need to feel safe? What makes one feel safe? In this way, the topic of internal security is thought of in a much more fundamental and multifaceted way than the urban political situation currently seems to limit it solely to the refugee situation.

The separation into a private and a public sphere is linked to the liberalism of the 18th and 19th centuries and the idea of the fundamental protection of individual freedom and autonomy from undue interference by the state or society. The private sphere is supposed to create a space of retreat, and one's own four walls provide a refuge into which we invite only selected people. For some time now, not only the concepts of privacy have been changing, but also the behaviors associated with it. What is worth protecting or what can be shared with the public is valued differently. Uninterruptedly, we can participate in the private lives of others, view images of them. On smartphones, our own photos mix with photos of friends and strangers; we view them on the same interface, nothing distinguishes our own memories with those of others.

Photographs shape our everyday lives. They are an important part of personal life, leisure activities and also still serve as a source of information. Photographs provide information about the political, economic, cultural and social situation and are artistic works in their own right whose design and aesthetics deserve attention. "Internal Security" as the thematic focus of the Photoszene Festivals 2016 gathers different photographic positions with regard to different aspects: Political-social questions are thus to play just as much a role in the selection of photographic positions as those concerning the private aspects of "Internal Security."

The curated exhibitions on the thematic complex Inner Security / The State I am In opened on the weekend of September 16-17, 2016 and were on view at the following institutions:
* KUNSTRÄUME der Michael-Horbach-Stiftung * Kirche Sankt Gertrud * Tiefgarage Ebertplatz * Bruch & Dallas * GOLD + BETON * LABOR

Der Weg der Bilder

Panel discussion

Who makes pictures? Who owns pictures? Who owns the memories of pictures? Who allows pictures? Who decides about pictures?

An image, a photograph, once made and published, immediately takes on a life of its own. It is further used, distributed, edited, judged, loved, hated, interpreted or censored - the photographer quickly has the feeling of having lost control over his or her own image. The image changes its perception and judgment through altered contexts or foreshortening, no longer under the influence of the one who originally created an image. And as viewers, depending on the context, we can no longer easily distinguish whether a photograph was taken by an amateur or a professional, by a journalist or an artist. Sometimes the place where an image is viewed gives a clue: in an exhibition, in various media, in social networks, in a photo book, in a catalog, in a film, etc.

Besides photographers and artists, there are of course many others who deal with, interpret and use the medium of photography. Alongside them, journalists, sociologists, neurologists, criminologists or anthropologists work with images, not to mention the millions of amateurs and private individuals who take photographs and communicate with them. Each of these groups has different requirements for and perspectives on images.

A universal "grammar" for reading these images does not yet exist. But don't we need one, when it is more and more about visual communication and more and more is communicated with photography? If we assume that photography plays an active role in social and cultural change. And if we assume that photography has an influence on what we want, what we see, what we do, who we are, where we go and what we remember.

With Eva Leitolf, Jochem Hendricks, Astrid Proll and Max Regenberg.

Page Impressions

The exhibition "Page Impressions" at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (MAKK) from September 20 to 25, 2016, presents a selection of around 50 international, printed photo magazines dedicated to artistic and documentary photography. Most are produced as independent magazines with a low budget and, compared to popular magazines, in rather small print runs. For the most part, the issues are not available in book and magazine stores.
Visitors are invited to pick up the photo magazines presented in the MAKK's Design Lounge to see for themselves the diversity of the medium in terms of content and design. Each exhibit will be accompanied by a data sheet that provides information on the respective history of the photo magazine, its concept, production, and distribution. Both current and back issues will be on display.

Photographer's Night

The "Photographer's Night - Gala of Photography" has been considered a highlight of the Photoszene Festival for years. The theme of this year's event is "Icons of Flight - The New Power of Photography". The trigger is the dramatic developments of the last two years and the special role of photography in this. It has been a long time since still images have touched the viewer so strongly and influenced political decisions.

The renowned photographers Daniel Etter, Sibylle Fendt and Nikos Pilos were presented with their works that evening.

The evening was moderated by Andreas Trampe, Stern Bildredaktion (Director of Photography).

Das Fotobuch-Quartett+

The Photo Book Quartet+ discussed again - this time with Renate Gruber as guest!
As a conclusion of the Photoszene Festival 2016 Renate Gruber, Markus Schaden, Wolfgang Zurborn, Frank Dürrach and Damian Zimmermann discussed and argued about four photo books and were again guests at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Cologne.
