Over 130,000 visitors | 72 exhibitions | Over 200 artists | 55 events
The opening of this year's Photoszene Festival at Museum Ludwig was a great success with 1,500 visitors!
After this brilliant start in the context of the exhibition opening of Fiona Tan, the exhibitions of the other Artist Meets Archive artists Erik Kessels, Ola Kolehmainen, Ronit Porat, Roselyne Titaud and Antje Van Wichelen were opened in the MAKK - Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, in the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, in the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, in the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum and the Rheinisches Bildarchiv at Kaune Contemporary. Together with all those involved, the Photoszene would like to thank everyone for an all-around successful opening weekend!
More than 65 further exhibitions on photography were shown in parallel by Cologne's unique art scene - from further institutions such as the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne, the Forum for Photography, the Japan Foundation and a large number of renowned galleries to art spaces and studios - Cologne inspired again with an exciting and varied program only seven months after the last festival!
Photoszene Köln would like to thank all artists, exhibitors, visitors, partners and supporters for their contributions, their interest, their support and their participation in a lively exploration of photography in Cologne.
Artist Meets Archive #1
The Photoszene Residency Artist Meets Archive was the central program of the 2018 and 2019 Photoszene festivals, making visible the significant diversity and quality of photography in the city's collections and archives through exchanges with international artists.
At the invitation of Photoszene Köln, the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, the Kölnische Stadtmuseum, the MAKK - Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, the Museum Ludwig, the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, the Rheinische Bildarchiv Köln and Die Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur opened their collections and archives for a joint project: internationally active artists dedicated themselves to the collections during the Photoszene Festival in the fall of 2018 and, through their specific gaze and their own artistic practice, provided new perspectives on sections of the collections. The results of this engagement were on view as an exhibition or intervention during the Photoszene Festival in May 2019 in the respective houses.
The invited artists were:
Erik Kessels (NL), Ola Kolehmainen (FIN), Ronit Porat (ISR), Fiona Tan (NL/IDN), Roselyne Titaud (F) und Antje van Wichelen (BE)

Symposium
A symposium of the KHM, the International Photoscene Cologne and the German Society for Photography (DGPh).
Over the course of two days, the symposium addressed questions about the materiality of photography. Procedures of a (post)photographic engagement with the medium were presented, such as virtual reality, 3D photography or augmented reality. Structural and institutional conditions of the transfer of photographic archives into a digital future were discussed as well as curatorial and artistic strategies of their activation.
With Joël Vacheron, ECAL, Marco De Mutiis, Fotomuseum Winterthur / Hochschule Luzern, Joanna Zylinska, Goldsmiths University of London, Lilian Haberer, KHM, Lucia Halder, Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Sabine Folie, VALIE EXPORT CENTER LINZ, Blaschke und Armin Linke, ECAL, Madhusree Dutta, Akademie der Künste der Welt
Photoszene-Festival Party
With fine dance music by The PhotoBook Museum resident DJ Tobby Lolli, we celebrated photography, art and all our exhibitors and exhibitions again this year.
We invited to Kunsthaus Rhenania, to the exhibition "Beyond" curated by Miriam Zlobinski and Juliane Herrmann, where before at 8:30 pm the couch talk of jungekunstfreunde took place under the title "Kulturspur Spezial - Teil 2 Women are present (?) Fotografinnen in der Kunst".
#shotsomemusic - the exhibition
You love music? And photography? You take photos that sound like music and the sound of your favorite band creates the most beautiful images in your head?
That was the call that Photoszene launched together with c/o pop at the beginning of March. In four weeks, over 370 amounts were posted on Instagram under #shotsomemusic. The best pictures were selected by a jury and can be seen during the festival period in the following c/o pop locations in Ehrenfeld:
*Laden 1/3, *Claudia Caparelli, *24 Colours, *Bürgerzentrum Ehrenfeld, *Stapel.Bar, *Cologne's Roastery
