Petra Wittmar, born in Medebach in Hochsauerland, studied photography at the University GHS/Folkwangschule Essen from 1976 to 1983. Since then she has worked as a freelance photographer, focusing on European architecture of the early 20th century and the theme of urban and suburban spaces. She lives in Essen and has worked with Ulrich Deimel since 1985.
The work is from Wittmar's series on her hometown of Medebach, which is a counterpart to and continuation of a cycle on Medebach created between 1979 and 1983 as the conclusion of her studies. In these works, she deals with the living conditions of a small town in the Sauerland region, where she spent her childhood and youth, in a manner that is as sensitive as it is sober. In doing so, she sees Medebach as a model that makes the reality of life in the German provinces tangible in a very general way.
