This May belonged to photography! Seven exhibitions at ten locations in Cologne formed the core program of the Photoszene Festival from 12 - 21 May 2023 in Cologne, including current photographic positions in the Photoszene Co-Labs! and the residency project Artist Meets Archive #3. The next festival will take place from 9 May - 8 June 2025.
Photoszene Festival became Photoszene United, 10 days in May became a whole photo summer full of art, exhibitions and talks.
The opening of the Photoszene Festival at the Museum Ludwig was a complete success with 1,500 visitors! Together with all those involved, the Photoszene would like to thank everyone for an all-around successful opening weekend!
More than 65 further exhibitions on photography were shown in parallel by Cologne's unique art scene - from further institutions such as the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne, the Forum for Photography, the Japan Foundation and a large number of renowned galleries to art spaces and studios - Cologne inspired again with an exciting and varied program only seven months after the last festival!
With 89 exhibitions this year, the Cologne International Photoszene once again brought together photography's players in a strong common bond, however diverse their engagement with photography may be: the focus and strength of the Cologne Photoszene lies in precisely this versatility that the medium offers.
While photography exhibitions gradually opened in the city area, the main event period was around Photokina from September 16 - 25, asking for an extensive supporting program and gallery tours. On September 16 and 17, together with the curators Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber and the participating artists, we opened this year's central exhibition "Innere Sicherheit / The State I Am In".
Under the title WallPaper and with more than 70 photography exhibitions throughout the city, there was a multifaceted overview of the medium, which was complemented by an extensive supporting program during the festival week from September 16 to 21 in the festival centers The PhotoBookMuseum and Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln.
